Supported Accommodation is a type of housing that is designed to meet the needs of people with a disability. These types of housing are usually for high-level care and are designed to support people with specific care needs. If you or someone you're caring for needs additional assistance with day-to-day activities, disability-supported accommodation might be the answer.

Types of supported accommodation

Supported accommodation is split into two categories:
Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)
Supported Independent Living (SIL)
Both of these offer advanced support for people with disabilities, but with some very distinct differences. It's important to note that both are available under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), but the providers of SDA and SIL are different. This means you can change your SDA provider without changing your SIL provider, and vice versa.

Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)

Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is a type of accommodation for people who need specialist housing solutions. It covers a range of supports and focuses on helping those with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs.

Most of the time, this means moving into housing provided by a property owner or a 3rd party. Many SDA properties are owned by the Victorian government and are located all throughout the state. There are similar programs Australia-wide as well, so it's important to find out what is available for you in your local area.

SDA can be included in your NDIS plan. Once you've been approved for an SDA property, you will only pay rent and utility costs. Rent is a percentage of Commonwealth Disability Support Pension and Rent Assistance payments.

If you're looking for SDA, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) has online systems for enrolling dwellings and notifying the NDIA of dwelling vacancies. You can find them on the NDIA website.

Supported Independent Living (SIL)

SIL is all about helping you live as independently as possible in your own home, regardless of ability. SIL pays for support workers to help NDIS participants live independently in their home. It covers things like personal care (showering, dressing, etc.), participating in activities, and other household tasks, like cooking and cleaning.

SIL disability services are available for people requiring all levels of support; low, standard, and high.

It's important to note that if you're eligible for SDA funding, you'll automatically receive SIL funding as well.
