Respite, or respite care, is when another person, such as a paid carer, friend or family member, takes over your caring role for a short period of time. It's a great opportunity for both a carer and the person they're caring for to take a break and find some time for themselves.

Respite care is available anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks. This will depend on the Participant's needs, the type of respite care centres available nearby, and the Participant's eligibility. Most of the time accessing respite care is simple, as there are providers who will offer it both in your own home or in a separate facility. However, it's important to understand what respite care actually offers, should you need it.

why get respite care

Why get respite care?

If you're feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, or just need some time to feel like yourself again, respite care could be the answer. Caring for a loved one can be both emotionally and physically demanding, so it's important to take some time out for yourself every now and then. It helps prevent stress and burnout, as well as gives both parties some time to focus on personal matters.

It's the perfect opportunity to take a break and look after yourself.

What does respite care involve?

Respite care involves moving the person you're caring for into the care of someone else for a short time. Usually, this care is provided by an organisation that specialises in respite care, but it can also be offered by friends or family members.

Every type of respite care works differently and is available in different situations. Some offer complete day-to-day care and support, while others provide more specific care, such as social opportunities or more relaxed aged care. It's important to make sure you're eligible for respite care before applying.

Types of Respite Care Available

emergency respite care

Emergency respite care

If you've found yourself in a situation where you can't provide care, emergency respite care will ensure the person you're caring for can still be looked after. It's a good idea to create a plan in the event you get sick or injured, so anyone available will be able to arrange emergency respite care.
short term respite care

Short-term respite care

Short-term respite care is typically used for a few days or weeks, and is a great way to recharge your batteries. This type of respite care is often provided in a respite centre, but can also be arranged in other settings such as a residential aged care home or your own home.
community respite care

Community respite care

Community respite is provided under the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) to those found eligible. The CHSP supports the relationship between you and your carer through a range of planned respite services that allow carers to take a break from their usual caring duties.
residential respite care

Residential respite care

Residential respite care services are for those that need care, but only for a few days or weeks. This type of respite is provided in an aged care home, and is great for those needing extra care for a short time (in the event of an injury or otherwise), or to give your usual carer a break.

How much does respite care cost?

The amount you pay for respite care will depend on the type of respite care you receive, as well as the level of care. Some respite care is covered under the NDIS, while for others you may be expected to contribute to the cost of care and services.

Most respite care will cost you a basic daily fee, and sometimes a booking fee. These will both change depending on the provider. And while you won't need to complete a means assessment to access respite care, you will need to plan ahead to make sure you're making the most of it.
